About Newark

The City of Newark is the largest city in New Jersey. Located in the heart of New Jersey’s Gateway Region, Newark is the second largest city in the New York metropolitan area, approximately 8 miles west of Manhattan.

For the past two decades, Newark has seen massive changes and growth, hosting new construction of businesses and centers of learning and the arts. The advantage Newark has is that it is a great city, with a terrific infrastructure, culture, and people.

The East Ward consists of much of Newark’s Downtown commercial district, as well as the Ironbound neighborhood. The Ironbound is a destination for shopping, dining, and nightlife.

Numerous movies, television programs, and music videos have been shot in Newark. Its period architecture and its streetscape are an ideal urban setting. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center is the home of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey State Opera. Attracting over 400,000 visitors each year, it is the nation’s sixth-largest performing arts center. The nearby Prudential Center is an arena hosting a myriad of sports and entertainment productions including American Idol Live.

Newark is easier to access than almost any city of its size in America. It is a hub of air, road, rail, and ship traffic, making it a significant gateway into the New York metropolitan area and the northeastern United States. Newark Liberty International Airport, is the second-busiest airport in the New York region and the 14th-busiest in the United States

Newark Penn Station, situated just east of downtown, is the city’s major train station, with links to Manhattan, three New Jersey Transit commuter rail lines and Amtrak service to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Reasonably priced and a relative bargain compared to New York, it has easy access to amenities such as catering or a quick bite to eat, handy building supply warehouses nearby, easy access to major roads, airports and rail, and a ready and willing workforce. The ease of getting permits and parking make it an ideal, production-friendly town.
